Tips to Incorporate Children’s Literature into Your Classroom:

  • Explore the book world more! Lots of free on-line books, used books, amazon, libraries. Email me if you’d like my personal suggestions.
  • Choose a book YOU like! (Nothing is more contagious than the actual and real excitement and interest of the teacher. Kids intuitively sense when you really like something too and take interest in it themselves BECAUSE of you).
  • DON’T BE SHY! Just as self-confidence can be contagious, so can’t timidity. Don’t worry about not knowing ALL the words- this is not a test. You and children can enjoy stories without knowing every single word- and in fact this is better for their brain to get it’s work-out.
  • Establish a story time EVERY class. They love it, get used to it and it works very well.
  • Do creative art projects with the kids: draw a scene from the story, draw a character (and/or describe said picture), collaborate on a mural taking different scenes from the book, make pictures of specific vocabulary words, etc.
  • Read the same story 2-3 times for older children, and 4-6 times for younger children, depending on the story, the group, etc.

1.The first 2 times at least, you should read it the same way, the second time already asking for volunteers to help you hold the book or turn the pages.

2.When they are familiar with the story, ask them listening comprehension questions, depending on age level: who’s this, what’s her name, etc.

3.Then read the story asking students to take part repeating the catch phrases.

4. Read the story choosing volunteers to stand up and say the repeated phrase, while acting it out.

5. If they are older students, it is time that you let the STUDENTS read.

6. This leads to the next phase, that if the teacher wanted, small skits can be made, taken directly from the book, or paraphrased. Students love this too.

  • Using books is also a great template for spreading into the world of theatre with your English students. You can check out all those great tips, stemming from books on the theatre SPEAK OUT page.
